Richard “Craig” Tadlock was sentenced to 12 years in prison and ordered to pay $2.3 million in restitution on 6 counts of contractor fraud. This sentence comes in light of a Virginia jury’s decision to convict Tadlock in June. Three BLG client families were among those Tadlock defrauded. His crime scheme started when he would present himself as an experienced homebuilder, despite being unlicensed. After being hired, Tadlock would hold families hostage by demanding additional payment and threatening to stop work on their house if payments were late. Work was done slowly, poorly, and usually not at all.
Before his conviction, BLG successfully brought four cases against Tadlock and a real-estate brokerage that helped connect him to his victims. BLG negotiated settlements for two cases, while winning verdicts in court for the other two. Litigation centered on Long and Foster Real Estate Inc. Long and Foster introduced Tadlock to clients as a quality contractor. This helped the criminal scheme by giving Tadlock an air of trustworthiness which helped him deceive and defraud his victims. BLG’s litigation efforts resulted in successful outcomes for all 4 cases.
