BLG Fights Registration for Wrongfully Convicted Man on Constitutional Grounds--As seen in VA Lawyers Weekly
Bosson Legal Group recently took on a case involving an unfair and unjust remedy to what is nevertheless a serious matter—Virginia’s lifelong sexual offender registry. The Firm represented a man who was convicted decades ago at the age of 18 for a felony for his consensual actions with his 14-year old girlfriend. If the man had been charged with a different felony applicable to the situation, Virginia’s laws would have prevented him from being on the lifelong registry despite the fact that both felonies are related to the same conduct.
BLG fought this case from the District Court to the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. Although attorneys at BLG successfully convinced the Court that Virginia’s laws on this matter are “clumsy, unwise, or… unfair,” the Court eventually decided to uphold the laws as Constitutional. Despite this outcome, BLG successfully generated coverage of this unique and little-known injustice, and remains committed to fighting for fairness and against injustice.
